What is the EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) under the Sustainable Products Regulation?

The European Digital Product Passport is the version of the DPP introduced by the ESPR proposal as the key initiative to promote a circular economy and sustainability throughout Europe.

  • 11 December 2019 — European Green Deal adopted, with vision to make the EU carbon-neutral by 2050

  • 11 March 2020 — EU Circular Economy Action Plan adopted

  • 30 March 2022 — Proposal for the new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), published, including outlines for new Digital Product Passport information requirements

  • 5 December 2023 — Provisional agreement between European Parliament and European Council on the ESPR and Digital Product Passport legislation

  • 2023–2027 — Digital Product Passport regulations in process via “delegated acts” to determine DPP requirements for specific product categories, including for:

Key industries for the EU Digital Product Passport

Battery Passport

According to the EU Battery Regulation Amendment released on July 2023, all electric vehicle batteries and industrial batteries on the EU market with a capacity of over 2 kWh will require a unique Battery Passport to be identified with a QR code.
